How England performed
Under head coach Martin Johnson and captain Steve Borthwick, England opened the 2009 Six Nations by beating Italy 36–11 at Twickenham. Two away defeats followed: Wales won 23–15 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, and Ireland edged a 14–13 contest at Croke Park in Dublin, leaving England with one win from three.
The response came back at Twickenham, where England beat France 34–10, and they finished with a 26–12 win over Scotland at the same ground. Three wins and two defeats, with 124 points scored and 70 conceded, earned second place, matching their finish in 2008. All three wins came at home, both defeats came on the road, and the loss in Dublin was by a single point.
