How England performed

Under head coach Stuart Lancaster and captain Chris Robshaw, England's 2012 Six Nations was built on narrow margins. They opened with a 13–6 win over Scotland at Murrayfield and followed it with a 19–15 victory over Italy at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

The key match came at Twickenham in the third round, where Wales won 19–12 to inflict England's only defeat. England responded with a 24–22 win over France at the Stade de France and closed the championship by beating Ireland 30–9 at Twickenham, their most comfortable result of the campaign. Four wins and one defeat, with 98 points scored and 71 conceded, earned second place, one position below the title they had won in 2011. Three of their four victories came by seven points or fewer.
