The story so far
England have won the championship 39 times, ten of them shared, across the 130 Home Nations, Five Nations and Six Nations championships on our records, from 1883 to 2026. Thirteen of those titles came with a Grand Slam, and in 511 championship matches England have won 267, drawn 38 and lost 192.
They won the first two championships, in 1883 and 1884, both with the Triple Crown, but after the 1892 title came a long wait until 1910. The strongest early run followed: Grand Slams in 1913 and 1914, and again in 1921, 1923, 1924 and 1928. Another came in 1957, and the next under Mike Davis in 1980. The leanest years were the 1970s, with last place in 1974, 1975 and 1976, when England lost all four matches, while the 1972 championship was never completed.
Geoff Cooke's side won back-to-back Grand Slams in 1991 and 1992, Jack Rowell's added another in 1995, and Clive Woodward's England took the first two Six Nations titles, in 2000 and 2001, before the Grand Slam of 2003. Martin Johnson's team won in 2011, and Eddie Jones oversaw a Grand Slam in 2016 and further titles in 2017 and 2020. Under Steve Borthwick, England were second in 2025 and fifth in 2026.
