How England performed

A 25–0 win over Wales at Rectory Field, Blackheath, opened England's 1896 campaign on 4 January, but it proved to be their only victory. Ireland won 10–4 at Meanwood Road, Leeds, on 1 February, and Scotland closed England's programme with an 11–0 win at Hampden Park, Glasgow, on 14 March.

England finished third with one win and two defeats, scoring 29 points and conceding 21, a drop of one place from second in 1895.
