The story so far

England and the Rugby World Cup

England have won the Rugby World Cup once, in Australia in 2003, when Clive Woodward's side won all seven matches to become the first northern-hemisphere champions. In the ten tournaments on our records they have also reached three other finals, finishing runners-up at home in 1991 under Geoff Cooke, in France in 2007 under Brian Ashton and in Japan in 2019 under Eddie Jones. Fourth place in South Africa in 1995 under Jack Rowell and third in France in 2023 under Steve Borthwick complete a record of six top-four finishes.

The quarter-final has been the stopping point in the leaner tournaments: in 1987 under Martin Green, in 1999 under Woodward, four years before the title, and in 2011 under Martin Johnson. The low point came in 2015, when England hosted the tournament and went out at the pool stage under Stuart Lancaster with two wins from four matches. The recovery was swift: Jones's side reached the final four years later, and Borthwick's team followed with third place in 2023.

In France in 2023 England won six of their seven matches on the way to third place, a second successive top-four finish after the 2019 final. The next World Cup is in Australia, starting on 1 October 2027, in the country where England won their only title in 2003.
