Six Nations Championship
England: Champions
How England performed
England began the 2000 Six Nations by beating Ireland 50–18 at Twickenham, then won 15–9 against France at the Stade de France, their narrowest victory of the championship. Wales were beaten 46–12 at Twickenham and Italy 59–12 at the Stadio Flaminio in Rome, leaving Clive Woodward's side, captained by Matt Dawson, with four wins from four going into the final round.
That last match, at Murrayfield on 2 April, went Scotland's way, 19–13, and denied England a Grand Slam. Even so, they finished as champions with four wins and one defeat, scoring 183 points and conceding 70, an average of more than 36 points a match. Their two home matches, against Ireland and Wales, produced 96 points, and the defeat in Edinburgh was the only game in which they scored fewer than 15.
