How England performed

England's 2008 Six Nations began with a setback, Wales winning 26–19 at Twickenham in the opening round. Brian Ashton's side, captained by Phil Vickery, recovered with a narrow 23–19 win over Italy at the Stadio Flaminio in Rome and then produced their best result of the campaign, beating France 24–13 at the Stade de France.

A second defeat followed at Murrayfield, where Scotland won 15–9, before England closed the championship by beating Ireland 33–10 at Twickenham, their highest score of the tournament. Three wins and two defeats, with 108 points scored and 83 conceded, earned second place, an improvement of one position on 2007. Two of their three victories came away from home, in Rome and Saint-Denis.
