How England performed

After the 2–3 defeat at home in 1997, England lost 1–3 in Australia in 1998–99. The first Test at Brisbane was drawn, England finishing on 179 for 6 in their second innings after Australia had made 485 and declared on 237 for 3. Defeat followed at the WACA Ground, Perth, where England were dismissed for 112 and 191 and lost by seven wickets, and again at Adelaide, by 205 runs, which put Australia 2–0 up with two to play and kept the Ashes with them.

England won the fourth Test at Melbourne by 12 runs, recovering from a 70-run first-innings deficit to make 244 and then bowling Australia out for 162. The series ended at Sydney, where Australia won by 98 runs after dismissing England for 220 and 188.
