How England performed
England followed their 3–1 home win in 1985 with a 2–1 victory in Australia in 1986–87, keeping the Ashes. Brisbane gave them the lead, England's first-innings 456 putting them well clear of Australia's 248 before they reached 77 for 3 to win by seven wickets.
Two high-scoring draws followed. At the WACA Ground, Perth, England declared twice, on 592 for 8 and 199 for 8, with Australia finishing on 197 for 4, and at Adelaide Australia declared on 514 for 5 and 201 for 3 before England closed on 39 for 2. The series was secured at Melbourne, where Australia were dismissed for 141 and 194 and England's 349 was enough for victory by an innings and 14 runs. Australia won the final Test at Sydney by 55 runs, England making 275 and 264 against 343 and 251, but the series was already England's.
