How England performed
The 1989 series in England went heavily Australia's way. England, holders after their 2–1 win in 1986–87, were beaten 0–4 over six Tests, and Australia passed 400 in their first innings in every match.
The opening Test at Leeds set the pattern: Australia declared on 601 for 7, and despite England's 430 they won by 210 runs after dismissing England for 191 in the second innings. Lord's, London brought a six-wicket defeat after Australia's 528, and Birmingham was drawn with England having batted once, for 242. A nine-wicket win for Australia at Manchester settled the series and returned the Ashes to them. Nottingham was heavier still, Australia declaring on 602 for 6 and winning by an innings and 180 runs, before England drew the final Test at The Oval, London, finishing on 143 for 5.
