England: Drawn 1–1 (Australia retained)

How England performed

Needing to win in Australia in 1962–63 after losing 1–2 at home in 1961, England came up one victory short, and a 1–1 series draw left the Ashes with Australia. The opening Test at Brisbane was a high-scoring draw, England's 389 against Australia's 404 followed by 278 for 6 in their second innings. England went ahead at Melbourne, edging a first-innings lead with 331 to 316 and reaching 237 for 3 to win by seven wickets.

Australia struck back immediately at Sydney, dismissing England for 104 in the second innings and winning by eight wickets. The last two Tests were drawn. At Adelaide England were 223 for 4 in their second innings after Australia had made 393 and 293, and back at Sydney the match ended with Australia on 152 for 4 after England had declared on 268 for 8. One win, three draws and one defeat left the series level.
