The story so far

England and the T20 World Cup

England have won the men's T20 World Cup twice in the ten editions on our records: in the West Indies in 2010 under Andy Flower and in Australia in 2022 under Matthew Mott, each time with five wins from seven matches. They also reached the final in India in 2016 under Trevor Bayliss, finishing runners-up, and have been semi-finalists three times, in 2021 under Chris Silverwood, in 2024 under Mott and in 2026 under Brendon McCullum. That makes six finishes in the last four, and two titles, from ten attempts.

The early years were uneven. England went out at the Super 8 stage in South Africa in 2007, on home soil in 2009 and in Sri Lanka in 2012, with the 2010 title arriving in the middle of that sequence. The 2007 tournament yielded a single win from five matches, and the 2014 event in Bangladesh, under Ashley Giles, brought a Super 10 exit with one win from four. The recovery since has been marked: in all five editions from 2016 onwards England have reached at least the semi-finals, under four different coaches.

The most recent tournament, in India and Sri Lanka in 2026, ended in the semi-finals after six wins from eight matches under McCullum, the most wins England have recorded at a single edition on our records. That extended a run of last-four finishes stretching back to the 2016 final, with the 2022 title and the 2024 semi-final in between. The next T20 World Cup is in Australia and New Zealand in 2028, where England will be chasing a third title.
