How England performed
A second successive 1–4 defeat came in Australia in 2002–03. The opening Test at Brisbane ended in a 384-run loss after England were dismissed for 79 in their second innings, and innings defeats followed at Adelaide, where Australia declared on 552 for 9, and at the WACA Ground, Perth, where England made 185 and 223 against 456. That left Australia 3–0 up with two to play and the Ashes retained.
At Melbourne England made 387 in their second innings, having been 281 behind on first innings, and Australia reached 107 for 5 to win by five wickets. England ended the series with a 225-run win at Sydney, where the first innings were separated by a single run, 363 to 362, and England declared their second innings on 452 for 9 before dismissing Australia for 226.
