The story so far
England and the Cricket World Cup
England have played in each of the 13 men's 50-over World Cups on our records, from 1975 to 2023, and have won the trophy once, at Lord's in 2019. Trevor Bayliss's side won eight of their 11 matches in a tournament co-hosted by England and Wales. Before that, England were regular contenders who could not quite finish the job: semi-finalists in 1975 and 1983, and runners-up in 1979, 1987 and 1992, the last two under Micky Stewart. Each of those first five tournaments ended with England in the last four.
The editions between 1992 and 2019 were much harder. England failed to reach the semi-finals in six successive tournaments: quarter-final exits in 1996 under Ray Illingworth and in 2011 under Andy Flower, pool-stage departures in 1999 as hosts under David Lloyd, in 2003 under Duncan Fletcher and in 2015 under Peter Moores, and a Super 8 finish in the West Indies in 2007, again under Fletcher. The 2015 campaign in Australia and New Zealand brought only two wins from six matches, yet four years later England were world champions.
The defence of the title in India in 2023 went badly, with England winning only three of their nine league-stage matches under Matthew Mott and going out before the knockout rounds. That leaves 2019 as their only World Cup win in 13 attempts. The next tournament is in 2027, hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, where England will look to rediscover the consistency of the early editions and the edge that carried them to the title in 2019.
