England: Lost 1–4

How England performed

The Ashes went back to Australia in 1974–75, when England, holders after the 2–2 draw of 1972, lost the six-Test series 1–4. Australia began at Brisbane by dismissing England for 265 and 166 to win by 166 runs, and doubled their lead at the WACA Ground, Perth, where their 481 set up a nine-wicket victory.

The third Test at Melbourne was drawn with Australia on 238 for 8, eight runs short of victory, after England had made 242 and 244. Defeats by 171 runs at Sydney and 163 runs at Adelaide followed, Australia declaring their second innings both times. England finished strongly at Melbourne, dismissing Australia for 152 and 373 and making 529 to win by an innings and 4 runs, but by then the series had long been decided.
