England: Won 5–1

How England performed

Six Tests in Australia in 1978–79 brought England five wins and a 5–1 series victory, retaining the Ashes they had won 3–0 in 1977. Every match produced a result. England began at Brisbane by dismissing Australia for 116 and won by seven wickets, then made it 2–0 at the WACA Ground, Perth with a 166-run win as Australia were bowled out for 190 and 161.

Australia pulled one back at Melbourne, where England managed only 143 and 179 and lost by 103 runs. England responded at Sydney from a deficit of 142 on first innings, 152 against 294, scoring 346 in their second innings and dismissing Australia for 111 to win by 93 runs. A 205-run win at Adelaide followed, England's second-innings 360 proving decisive after first innings of 169 and 164, and they finished at Sydney with a nine-wicket victory, Australia making 198 and 143 to England's 308 and 35 for 1.
