England: Lost 1–2

How England performed

The 1982–83 series in Australia began with England as holders after their 3–1 win in 1981 and ended in a 1–2 defeat. The opening Test at the WACA Ground, Perth was drawn, England making 411 and 358 against Australia's 424 for 9 declared and 73 for 2. Australia then won at Brisbane by seven wickets and at Adelaide by eight, England falling well behind on first innings both times after being dismissed for 219 and 216.

Two down with two to play, England won the fourth Test at Melbourne by three runs in a match where every innings fell between 284 and 294: England made 284 and 294, Australia 287 and 288. That set up a decider at Sydney, but England could only draw it, finishing on 314 for 7 in their second innings after Australia's 314 and 382, and the Ashes returned to Australia.
