How England performed

England regained the Ashes in 2005, winning the home series 2–1 after a 1–4 defeat in Australia in 2002–03. The series opened badly at Lord's, London, where England were dismissed for 155 and 180 and lost by 239 runs.

England levelled at Birmingham by two runs, their 407 and 182 just enough against Australia's 308 and 279. At Manchester they declared their second innings on 280 for 6 and Australia finished on 371 for 9 to draw. England went ahead at Nottingham, where their 477 gave them a first-innings lead of 259; Australia made 387 in their second innings and England reached 129 for 7 to win by three wickets. The final Test at The Oval, London was drawn, with first innings of 373 and 367 and Australia 4 for 0 at the close, which secured the series for England.
