The Ashes

England: Drawn 1–1 (Australia retained)

How England performed

For the second series running England and Australia finished 1–1, this time in England in 1968, and the Ashes stayed with Australia. England started badly at Manchester, dismissed for 165 and 253 as Australia won by 159 runs, and spent the rest of the summer trying to draw level.

At Lord's, London, England declared on 351 for 7 and bowled Australia out for 78, but the match ended drawn with Australia on 127 for 4 in their second innings. Birmingham was also drawn, England's 409 and 142 for 3 declared leaving Australia on 68 for 1, and at Leeds England finished on 230 for 4 in pursuit after Australia had made 315 and 312. England finally won at The Oval, London, where their 494 and 181 against Australia's 324 and 125 brought a 226-run victory, but it only levelled the series.
