How England performed

The 1897–98 tour started well and finished badly. England made 551 in the 1st Test in Sydney and, after Australia's 237 and 408, reached 96 for one to win by nine wickets.

Australia won each of the remaining four Tests. Totals of 520 in Melbourne and 573 in Adelaide brought victories by an innings and 55 runs and by an innings and 13 runs. Back in Melbourne, Australia won by eight wickets after bowling England out for 174 and 263, and the final Test in Sydney went the same way: England led on first innings, 335 to 239, but were dismissed for 178 and Australia reached 276 for four to win by six wickets. Australia took the series 4–1.
