How England performed

Beaten 1–2 in Australia in 1982–83, England regained the Ashes at home in 1985 with a 3–1 win over six Tests. They opened with a five-wicket victory at Leeds, built on a first-innings 533, but Australia drew level at Lord's, London, winning by four wickets after scoring 425 in their first innings.

The middle of the series produced two draws. At Nottingham Australia's 539 gave them a first-innings lead of 83 over England's 456, and England finished on 196 for 2; at Manchester England declared on 482 for 9 and Australia batted out the match at 340 for 5 in their second innings. England then pulled clear with two innings victories. At Birmingham they declared on 595 for 5 and dismissed Australia for 335 and 142 to win by an innings and 118 runs, and at The Oval, London, they made 464 and bowled Australia out for 241 and 129 for victory by an innings and 94 runs.
