How England performed
England started the 1997 home series in strong form, dismissing Australia for 118 at Birmingham and declaring on 478 for 9 before completing a nine-wicket win. The second Test at Lord's, London was drawn after England were bowled out for 77 in their first innings, Australia declaring on 213 for 7 and England reaching 266 for 4 declared second time round.
Australia then took control with three wins in a row: by 268 runs at Manchester, by an innings and 61 runs at Leeds after declaring on 501 for 9, and by 264 runs at Nottingham, which settled the series and kept the Ashes in Australian hands. England finished with a 19-run win at The Oval, London, bowling Australia out for 104 in their second innings. The 2–3 defeat followed a 1–3 loss in Australia in 1994–95.
