England: Lost 0–4

How England performed

Defending the Ashes after their 2–1 win in 1956, England were beaten 0–4 in Australia in 1958–59, losing every Test bar one. The series began at Brisbane, where England were dismissed for 134 and 198 and lost by eight wickets. The margin was the same at Melbourne, where England were bowled out for 87 in their second innings and Australia reached 42 for 2 to win.

England avoided defeat at Sydney, declaring their second innings on 287 for 7 after trailing on first innings, 219 to Australia's 357. There was no recovery from there. Australia made 476 at Adelaide and won by ten wickets after England managed 240 and 270, and the final Test, back at Melbourne, followed the same course: England made 205 and 214, and Australia won by nine wickets to complete a 4–0 series win.
