England: Lost 1–4

How England performed

Victory by an innings and 124 runs in the 1st Test in Sydney promised much for England in 1901–02: they made 464 and bowled Australia out for 168 and 172. It proved to be their only win of the series.

In Melbourne, England were dismissed for 61 in their first innings and lost by 229 runs. Adelaide brought a first-innings lead, 388 to 321, but Australia reached 315 for six in the fourth innings to win by four wickets. Back in Sydney, England again led on first innings, 317 to 299, only to be bowled out for 99 and beaten by seven wickets. The final Test in Melbourne was closer: England led 189 to 144 on first innings but were dismissed for 178 in the fourth and lost by 32 runs. Australia took the series 4–1.
