England: Lost 0–1

How England performed

A single result decided the 1964 series in England, and it went Australia's way. Four of the five Tests were drawn, leaving England beaten 0–1 and the Ashes still with Australia, who had retained them in 1962–63.

England declared twice at Nottingham, on 216 for 8 and 193 for 9, but the opening Test was drawn with Australia on 40 for 2. Lord's, London also ended without a result, England's 246 giving them a first-innings lead over Australia's 176 before Australia reached 168 for 4. The decisive match came at Leeds, where Australia's 389 outweighed England's 268 and, with England dismissed for 229 second time round, Australia won by seven wickets. Manchester produced a high-scoring draw, Australia declaring on 656 for 8 and England answering with 611. England then finished on 381 for 4 in their second innings at The Oval, London after trailing by 197 on first innings, but the draw left the series with Australia.
