How England performed

Despite conceding 586 in Australia's first innings in Sydney, England won the opening Test of the 1894–95 series by 10 runs, making 325 and 437 and then bowling Australia out for 166. In Melbourne they recovered from 75 all out in their first innings to make 475 in their second, winning by 94 runs as Australia managed 123 and 333.

Australia hit back with two heavy wins: by 382 runs in Adelaide, where England were dismissed for 124 and 143, and by an innings and 147 runs in Sydney, where England made only 65 and 72 against Australia's 284. That left the series level at 2–2. In the final Test in Melbourne, England answered Australia's 414 and 267 with 385 and then 298 for four, winning by six wickets to take the series 3–2.
