How England performed

Four draws and a single defeat cost England the 1899 series. In the opening Test in Nottingham, Australia declared their second innings at 230 for eight and England, 193 in their first, finished on 155 for seven to draw.

The only result came at Lord's, London, where Australia made 421 and knocked off 28 without loss for a ten-wicket win after England had been bowled out for 206 and 240. England could not draw level. They led 220 to 172 on first innings at Leeds and were 19 without loss in their second when that match was drawn; in Manchester they made 372, bowled Australia out for 196 and finished on 94 for three after a declaration at 346 for seven. At The Oval, London, England made 576 and Australia, after 352, batted out the draw at 254 for five. Australia won the series 1–0.
