How England performed
Outright champions in 1964–65, England went unbeaten with two wins and a draw, scoring eight goals and conceding six.
Pickering opened the scoring and Greaves added a hat-trick in a 4–3 win over Northern Ireland at Windsor Park, Belfast on 3 October 1964, the hosts replying through Wilson and McLaughlin, twice. Wignall scored both goals in a 2–1 win over Wales at Wembley Stadium, London in November, Jones replying. On 10 April 1965 England drew 2–2 with Scotland at the same venue: R. Charlton and Greaves put them two up before Law and St. John levelled.
