The story so far
England and the World Cup
England's one World Cup title came on home soil in 1966, when Alf Ramsey's side won five and drew one of their six matches. Across the 17 editions on our records, from 1950 to 2026, the other deep runs were fourth place under Bobby Robson in 1990 and under Gareth Southgate in 2018, and third place under Thomas Tuchel in 2026. The quarter-final has been the most common stopping point, reached and lost seven times. In the matches on our records England have won 38, drawn 23 and lost 21, and Kane leads the World Cup scorers with 14, ahead of Lineker on ten, Bellingham on eight, Saka on six and Hurst on five.
The early years under Walter Winterbottom were mixed, with group-stage exits in 1950 and 1958 and quarter-finals in 1954 and 1962. After the 1970 quarter-final under Ramsey, England's next appearance on our records is 1982, when Ron Greenwood's side went out at the second group stage without losing a match. The 2000s brought frustration: quarter-final exits under Sven-Göran Eriksson in 2002 and 2006, the latter unbeaten in five games, a round-of-16 exit under Fabio Capello in 2010 and the low point of 2014, when Roy Hodgson's side went out in the group stage without a win. Southgate led the recovery, with fourth place in Russia in 2018 and a quarter-final in Qatar in 2022.
Under Tuchel in the United States, Canada and Mexico in 2026, England finished third, their best World Cup finish since 1966, with six wins, a draw and one defeat in eight matches. Those six wins were the most England have recorded at a single World Cup on our records. The next World Cup is in Morocco, Portugal and Spain in 2030.
