British Home Championship
England: Shared champions
How England performed
A win, a draw and a defeat were enough for England to share the 1955–56 championship, with five goals scored and three conceded.
The season began with a 2–1 defeat by Wales at Ninian Park, Cardiff on 22 October 1955, Tapscott and Jones scoring for the hosts before an own goal by Charles gave England their reply. Wilshaw scored twice and Finney once in a 3–0 win over Northern Ireland at Wembley Stadium, London in November. On 14 April 1956 England drew 1–1 with Scotland at Hampden Park, Glasgow, Haynes equalising in the 89th minute after Leggat's goal for the hosts.
