The story so far
England and the Home Championship
England were the most successful side in the British Home Championship. In the 88 seasons on our records, from 1883–84 to 1983–84, they won the title 54 times, 20 of them shared, and finished runners-up in 22 more. Across 254 matches against Scotland, Wales and Ireland (later Northern Ireland) they won 151, drew 55 and lost 48.
The first title, shared, came in 1885–86, and the 1890s brought three outright wins in a row from 1890–91 to 1892–93, each with a clean sweep of three victories. The years before the First World War were productive too, with titles in 1903–04, 1904–05 and 1908–09 among others. The 1920s were the lean spell: England finished bottom in 1923–24, 1925–26 and 1927–28, losing all three matches in the last of those.
After the Second World War came the strongest era. England won or shared the title in ten successive seasons from 1951–52 to 1960–61, and in eight more from 1967–68 to 1974–75, and they were champions again in 1977–78, 1978–79, 1981–82 and 1982–83. The final championship, in 1983–84, ended with England third. Bloomer, with 28 goals, is England's leading scorer in the competition in the matches on our records, ahead of Greaves on 20.
