How England performed
England, champions the previous season, did not win a match in 1961–62 and finished third, with two draws and a defeat, two goals scored and four conceded.
Douglas cancelled out G. Williams' opener in a 1–1 draw with Wales at Ninian Park, Cardiff on 14 October 1961. Charlton put England ahead against Northern Ireland at Wembley, London in November, but McIlroy's 81st-minute goal made it 1–1. The season ended with a 2–0 defeat by Scotland at Hampden Park, Glasgow on 14 April 1962, Wilson and Caldow, with a penalty, scoring.
