England: Shared champions
How England performed
For a second successive season England shared the title, finishing 1952–53 unbeaten with a win and two draws, nine goals scored and six conceded.
They drew 2–2 with Ireland at Windsor Park, Belfast on 4 October 1952, Lofthouse scoring early and Elliott equalising in the 87th minute after Tully's two goals for the hosts. England beat Wales 5–2 at Wembley Stadium, London in November, with Lofthouse scoring twice and Finney, J. Froggatt and Bentley once each, while Ford scored both Welsh goals. They then drew 2–2 with Scotland at the same venue on 18 April 1953: Broadis scored twice and Reilly twice for Scotland, his second in the 90th minute.
