The two year extension was announced on the 19th October. With a proven winner, it is hoped this will give England an excellent chance of retaining this title.

Sarina Wiegman’s England Record So Far

Since taking over the head coach role in September 2021 England have gone from strength to strength. Her first major tournament ended up with claiming the Euro 2022 title with a 2-1 extra time victory over Germany at Wembley. In 2023 England reached the 2023 Women’s World Cup final in Sydney, finishing second behind Spain after a 1-0 defeat. The Euros were then defended in 2025 after beating Spain in a penalty shootout after the game finished 1-1.

In three tournaments under Weigman England have reached the final each time, winning two of them.

The Contract Extension Can Only Be Good News

As at 1st September 2026, Weigman’s record stood at 80 matches, winning 56, drawing 13 and suffering only 11 defeats. Total goals scored during this period are 258 whilst conceding 57, providing her with a 70% win rate. England women have been consistently brilliant, qualifying for the 2023 World Cup, winning all ten games, scoring 80 goals and conceding zero.

In addition to exceptional results so far, in retaining Weigman, England also do not have to rebuild the coaching structure she has organised. The players and coaching staff are in place to mount a strong challenge for the next World Cup.

The next challenge for the Lionesses

With the head coach in place with an extended contract, England can now concentrate on qualifying for the 2027 World Cup. The foundation is in place, the squad performs well and Weigman can now hopefully lift a World Cup for England.
