England: Champions
How England performed
Shared champions the season before, England won the 1956–57 title outright, unbeaten with two wins and a draw, six goals scored and three conceded.
S. Matthews scored in the second minute at Windsor Park, Belfast on 6 October 1956, but McIlroy equalised and the match against Northern Ireland finished 1–1. Haynes, Brooks and Finney scored in a 3–1 win over Wales at Wembley Stadium, London in November, after Charles had given the visitors an early lead. England then came from behind to beat Scotland 2–1 at the same venue on 6 April 1957: Ring scored in the first minute before Kevan and Edwards turned the match round.
