How England performed
England, the holders, finished second in 1948–49, winning their first two matches before a defeat in the last, with eight goals scored and five conceded.
The season opened with a 6–2 win over Ireland at Windsor Park, Belfast on 9 October 1948: Mortensen scored a hat-trick, Matthews, Milburn and Pearson added the others, and Walsh scored twice for Ireland. Finney's goal gave England a 1–0 win over Wales at Villa Park, Birmingham in November. England then lost 3–1 to Scotland at Wembley Stadium, London on 9 April 1949, Mason, Steel and Reilly scoring before Milburn's reply.
