How England performed
A season after finishing third, England were champions in 1937–38, winning two of their three matches with seven goals scored and three conceded.
Mills scored a hat-trick in a 5–1 win over Ireland at Windsor Park, Belfast on 23 October 1937, with Hall and Brook also on the scoresheet and Stevenson replying. Perry gave Wales the lead at Ayresome Park, Middlesbrough in November, but Matthews and Hall turned the match round for a 2–1 England win. The season closed with a 1–0 defeat by Scotland at Wembley Stadium, London on 9 April 1938, Walker scoring in the sixth minute.
