The story so far

England and the Euros

England have yet to win the European Championship, but across the 11 editions on our records the last two have brought them closest. Gareth Southgate's side were runners-up at the 2020 tournament, played across Europe in 2021, and again in Germany in 2024. Before that, the best finishes were third place under Alf Ramsey in Italy in 1968 and a semi-final on home soil under Terry Venables in 1996. In the matches on our records England have won 18, drawn 16 and lost 11, with Shearer and Kane the joint leading scorers on seven goals, ahead of Rooney on six.

The lean years were long. Between 1968 and 1996 England's appearances on our records, in 1980, 1988 and 1992, all ended in the group stage, with Bobby Robson's 1988 side losing all three matches and Graham Taylor's 1992 team failing to win any of theirs. Kevin Keegan's side also went out in the group stage in 2000. Quarter-finals followed under Sven-Göran Eriksson in 2004 and Roy Hodgson in 2012, and a round-of-16 exit in France in 2016 preceded the turnaround under Southgate.

That turnaround produced back-to-back finals. The 2020 campaign was unbeaten, with five wins and two draws, yet still ended in second place, and the 2024 run in Germany brought three wins, three draws and one defeat across seven matches on the way to another final. The next European Championship, in 2028, is staged in England, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland, giving England a home tournament in which to turn consecutive final appearances into a first title.
