How England performed

England finished second in 1950–51, a year after winning the title. Baily scored twice in a 4–1 win over Ireland at Windsor Park, Belfast, with Lee and Wright also on target, and twice more in a 4–2 win over Wales at Roker Park, Sunderland, where Mannion and Milburn completed the scoring and Ford got both Welsh goals.

Scotland won 3–2 at Wembley Stadium, London, through Johnstone, Reilly and Liddell, with Hassall and Finney replying for England. That defeat left England runners-up with ten goals scored and six conceded.
