England: Super 8

How England performed

Hosting the 2009 T20 World Cup, England again went out in the Super 8 stage, matching their finish of 2007. Paul Collingwood remained captain, with Andy Flower as head coach. The tournament opened at Lord's with a 4-wicket defeat by the Netherlands, who reached 163/6 in the last over in reply to England's 162/5. England recovered to beat Pakistan by 48 runs at The Oval after making 185/5, which was enough to reach the Super 8.

In Group E, South Africa bowled England out for 111 at Trent Bridge and won by 7 wickets. England then edged past India by 3 runs at Lord's, defending 153/7. The final Super 8 match against West Indies at The Oval was decided by the D/L method: England made 161/6, but West Indies reached their revised target in 8.2 overs to win by 5 wickets. That ended England's home tournament with two wins and three defeats from five matches.
