How England performed

England travelled to Sri Lanka in 2012 as defending T20 World Cup champions, with Stuart Broad as captain and Andy Flower as head coach, but went out at the Super 8 stage. Group A produced contrasting results at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Afghanistan were dismissed for 80 as England, who had made 196/5, won by 116 runs. Two days later India made 170/4 and bowled England out for 80 in 14.4 overs to win by 90 runs.

England still progressed to the Super 8, where all three of their matches were played at Pallekele. West Indies posted 179/5 and won by 15 runs, England finishing on 164/4. A 6-wicket win over New Zealand, achieved with seven balls to spare, set up a final Super 8 match against hosts Sri Lanka, who made 169/6 and held England to 150/9 to win by 19 runs. England's defence of the title ended with two wins and three defeats from five matches.
