The story so far

England and the Women's T20 World Cup

England Women won the first Women's T20 World Cup on our records, on home soil in 2009, winning all five matches, and that remains their only title in ten tournaments. They have been in contention almost every time since, finishing runners-up four times, in Sri Lanka in 2012, Bangladesh in 2014, the West Indies in 2018 and at home in 2026, and reaching the semi-finals in 2016 under Mark Robinson, in 2020, and in 2023 under Jon Lewis.

There have been only two early exits, and both stand out. The 2010 tournament in the West Indies, straight after the title, ended in the group stage with one win from three matches. In the United Arab Emirates in 2024, Lewis's side won three of their four group matches yet still went out at that stage. Between those two exits England reached at least the semi-finals in six successive editions from 2012 to 2023, but the three finals in that run, in 2012, 2014 and 2018, all ended in second place.

The most recent edition, staged in England in 2026, brought a strong response to the 2024 disappointment under Charlotte Edwards: six wins from seven matches and a run to the final, where England again finished as runners-up. That was their fourth runners-up finish, and the 2009 title remains their only one. The story of England in this competition since then has been one of near misses rather than lean years, and the next step is converting another final into a second title.
