How England performed
England qualified for the 2020 UEFA European Championship, a pan-European tournament played in 2021, with seven wins from eight Group A fixtures, scoring 37 goals and conceding six. Kane scored 12, including hat-tricks against Bulgaria and Montenegro, and Sterling added eight; the only defeat was a 2–1 loss in the Czech Republic.
At the finals, Gareth Southgate's side, captained by Kane, conceded just twice in seven matches. Sterling's goals beat Croatia and the Czech Republic 1–0, either side of a goalless draw with Scotland, and Sterling and Kane scored in a 2–0 win over Germany in the round of 16. Kane struck twice in a 4–0 quarter-final win over Ukraine, and his goal in the 104th minute completed a 2–1 extra-time victory over Denmark in the semi-final. In the final against Italy, Shaw scored in the second minute, but the match finished 1–1 after extra time and England lost the penalty shoot-out 3–2 to finish as runners-up, a significant improvement on the round-of-16 exit of 2016.
