England: Quarter-finals

How England performed

England went through qualifying for the 2004 UEFA European Championship in Portugal unbeaten, with six wins and two draws from eight Group 7 fixtures. Beckham and Owen scored five goals each, and a goalless draw in Turkey completed the campaign.

At the finals, Sven-Göran Eriksson's side, captained by David Beckham, led France through Lampard's goal until stoppage time, when France scored twice to win 2–1. England responded with a 3–0 win over Switzerland, Rooney scoring twice and Gerrard adding the third, and a 4–2 victory over Croatia in which Rooney again scored twice, with Scholes and Lampard also on target. The quarter-final against the hosts, Portugal, finished 2–2 after extra time, Owen scoring in the third minute and Lampard in the 115th, and England lost the penalty shoot-out 6–5. Rooney ended with four goals, and two wins, a draw and a defeat, with ten goals scored and six conceded, was an improvement on the group-stage exit of 2000.
