England: Round of 16
How England performed
England's qualifying campaign for the 2016 UEFA European Championship in France was perfect: ten wins from ten Group E fixtures, with 31 goals scored and three conceded. Rooney scored seven times and Welbeck six, Welbeck's two goals having opened the campaign with a 2–0 win in Switzerland.
At the finals, Roy Hodgson's side, captained by Wayne Rooney, took the lead against Russia through Dier but conceded in stoppage time to draw 1–1. Wales were then beaten 2–1, Vardy equalising and Sturridge scoring the winner in the 90th minute, and a goalless draw with Slovakia completed the group. In the round of 16 against Iceland, Rooney converted a fourth-minute penalty, but Iceland scored twice by the 18th minute to win 2–1. England went out with one win, two draws and a defeat, four goals scored and four conceded, a step back from the quarter-final finish of 2012.
