England: Semi-finals
How England performed
England hosted the 1996 UEFA European Championship, with Terry Venables as manager and Tony Adams as captain, and reached the semi-finals without losing a match in normal or extra time. The group campaign opened with a 1–1 draw against Switzerland, Shearer scoring, before a 2–0 win over Scotland in which Shearer and Gascoigne were on target.
The final group fixture brought a 4–1 victory over the Netherlands, with Shearer and Sheringham each scoring twice. The quarter-final against Spain finished goalless after extra time, and England won the penalty shoot-out 4–2. In the semi-final against Germany, Shearer scored in the third minute, but the match ended 1–1 after extra time and England lost the shoot-out 6–5. Shearer finished with five goals, and England's record of two wins and three draws, with eight goals scored and three conceded, was a marked improvement on the group-stage exit of 1992.
