England: Group stage

How England performed

England's route to the 2000 UEFA European Championship, co-hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands, was a long one. A group campaign of three wins, four draws and a defeat, which included a Scholes hat-trick against Poland and a Shearer hat-trick in a 6–0 win over Luxembourg, led to a play-off against Scotland. Scholes scored both goals in a 2–0 first-leg win in Scotland, and although England lost the return 1–0 at home, they went through 2–1 on aggregate.

At the finals, Kevin Keegan's side, captained by Alan Shearer, led Portugal 2–0 through Scholes and McManaman inside 17 minutes but lost 3–2. Shearer's goal then gave England a 1–0 win over Germany. In the final group fixture England led Romania 2–1 at half-time through a Shearer penalty and Owen, but Romania won 3–2 with a penalty in the 89th minute. England went out at the group stage with one win and two defeats, five goals scored and six conceded, a step back from the semi-final finish of 1996.
