England: Quarter-finals

How England performed

England qualified for the 2012 UEFA European Championship, co-hosted by Poland and Ukraine, without losing a match, recording five wins and three draws in Group G with 17 goals scored and five conceded. Defoe opened the campaign with a hat-trick in a 4–0 win over Bulgaria, and Defoe, Rooney, Bent and Young each finished with three qualifying goals.

At the finals, Roy Hodgson's side, captained by Steven Gerrard, drew 1–1 with France, Lescott scoring, and then beat Sweden 3–2: Carroll put England ahead, Sweden turned the game round to lead 2–1, and Walcott and Welbeck replied. Rooney's goal secured a 1–0 win over the co-hosts, Ukraine, and with it a place in the quarter-finals. There England drew 0–0 with Italy after extra time and lost the penalty shoot-out 4–2. They went out with two wins and two draws from four matches, five goals scored and three conceded, matching the quarter-final finish of 2004.
