How England performed
England went through qualifying for the 1992 UEFA European Championship unbeaten, with three wins and three draws from six Group 7 fixtures. They beat Turkey 1–0 home and away and Poland 2–0 at home, drew 1–1 twice with the Republic of Ireland, and secured a 1–1 draw in Poland in the final qualifier, Lineker scoring the equaliser.
At the finals in Sweden, Graham Taylor's side, captained by Gary Lineker, began with goalless draws against Denmark and France. In the final group fixture against the hosts, England took a fourth-minute lead through Platt, but Sweden scored twice in the second half to win 2–1. England went out at the group stage with two draws and a defeat, having scored once and conceded twice. It was a second successive group-stage exit, following the same outcome in 1988.
