How England performed

Among England's qualifying fixtures for the 1980 UEFA European Championship was a 2–0 win over the Republic of Ireland in February 1980, in which Keegan scored both goals.

At the finals in Italy, Ron Greenwood's side, captained by Kevin Keegan, began with a 1–1 draw against Belgium, Wilkins scoring for England before Belgium equalised three minutes later. They then lost 1–0 to the hosts, Italy, Tardelli scoring in the 79th minute. A 2–1 win over Spain in the final group fixture, with goals from Brooking and Woodcock, was not enough to take England through, and their tournament ended at the group stage. They finished with one win, one draw and one defeat, scoring three goals and conceding three, a more modest outcome than the third-place finish of 1968.
